A rare and highly decorative antique Shahsavan soumak saddlebag woven in the Azerbaijan region of northwest Persia. The front features a beautifully drawn geometric composition centered by three large hooked medallions flanked by stylized trees, stars, and tribal protective devices, all rendered in rich natural dyes of madder red, deep indigo, ivory, walnut brown, and aubergine.
The weaving displays the intricate soumak technique for which Shahsavan textiles are renowned, with exceptional detail and remarkable durability. The original braided closure cords and plain-weave back survive, providing important evidence of its original function as a nomadic storage and transport bag.
