This antique Persian Feraghan Sarouk rug, measuring approximately 3'4" x 4'10" and dating to around 1880, is a highly decorative and finely woven example of late 19th century Persian craftsmanship. The rug combines the refined village artistry of the Feraghan region with the elegant drawing and superb coloration that have made antique Feraghan Sarouk rugs among the most sought-after Persian carpets by collectors and interior designers alike.

The composition is beautifully balanced, featuring an intricate allover floral and palmette design arranged around a stylized ivory central medallion. The drawing possesses remarkable precision and symmetry while still retaining the warmth and spontaneity associated with authentic village weaving. Particularly notable are the elongated floral devices and delicate botanical motifs that gracefully fill the richly ornamented field.

The color palette is exceptionally rich and sophisticated, centered around a warm terracotta-red field contrasted by deep midnight navy spandrels and borders. Accents of ivory, soft celadon, muted rose, sky blue, walnut brown, and pale pistachio green create tremendous visual depth and refinement. The natural vegetable dyes have aged beautifully, producing the mellow patina and subtle abrash collectors greatly admire in early Feraghan rugs.

The broad navy border is especially striking, filled with angular floral forms and geometric vinery that frame the composition with bold architectural strength. The contrast between the highly decorative border and the refined field gives the rug exceptional visual presence despite its relatively small size.

The weave is fine and compact, with excellent clarity visible from the reverse, indicating high-quality wool and skilled craftsmanship. The wool itself appears soft, lustrous, and well-preserved, contributing to the rug’s rich surface character and elegant handle.

Condition appears very good for a rug of this age, preserving strong color saturation, crisp drawing, and excellent overall presentation. Pieces from this period in such preserved condition are becoming increasingly difficult to find, particularly in smaller decorative formats that work well in modern interiors.

Given its authentic circa-1880 age, attractive scale, fine weave, strong decorative appeal, and excellent condition, this rug would reasonably carry a retail value in today’s market in the range of approximately $10,000 – $16,000 retail, with potential for stronger value among collectors seeking refined 19th century Feraghan Sarouk examples with outstanding color and drawing.
